The Villiers Quartet stands at the forefront of British chamber music. Named after London’s Villiers Street, the quartet channels their creative pulse into performances praised for “exquisite ensemble playing” (Seen & Heard International) and “commitment and virtuosity” (The Sunday Times). They are QuartetinResidence at the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building, Oxford University
Hailed as “Champions of British Music” (The Observer), the Villiers Quartet has carved out a distinctive voice through acclaimed recordings of Elgar, Delius, Peter Racine Fricker, William Sterndale Bennett, David Matthews, William Alwyn, and Kuljit Bhamra. Their 2020 world premiere of the complete 1888 Delius String Quartet — featuring rediscovered original movements — marked a major contribution to British music scholarship. The VQ has performed live on BBC Radio 3 and NPO Radio 4 from the Concertgebouw, and appeared on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune and BBC One’s The Andrew Marr Show. They are also the featured quartet on the BBC film Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

As advocates for new and rediscovered music, the Villiers Quartet has had new works written for them by composers including Alexander Goehr, Martyn Harry, Florence Anna Maunders, Alexander Ho, and Elizabeth Kelly. Their most recent recording, The Chamber Music of Ailsa Dixon, was released in 2025 to critical acclaim. The VQ’s teaching and outreach for musicians of the next generation span leading institutions across the UK, including Oxford University, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and the University of Nottingham.
With a bold artistic voice and a deep belief in the power of chamber music, the Villiers Quartet continues to shape the landscape of string quartet by inspiring audiences and communities wherever they perform.
